Gruta das Torres in Pico: 2026 Guide and Closure Notice

Gruta das Torres, on Pico Island, is the largest known lava tube in Portugal and one of the most interesting places in the Azores for understanding how a volcanic island forms from the inside. Descents into the cave are currently suspended for safety reasons, but the site remains relevant for understanding Pico’s volcanic identity. Please confirm the latest status before planning your visit.

Unlike more visually dramatic volcanic caves, such as Algar do Carvão on Terceira Island, Gruta das Torres is not mainly about a huge volcanic chimney, a lake at the bottom, or classic cave formations. Its value lies in understanding what a lava tube is, how lava moves underground, and how volcanic activity shaped Pico Island.

What is Gruta das Torres?

Gruta das Torres is a lava tube. This means it is not a traditional limestone cave formed by water dissolving rock, with classic limestone stalactites and stalagmites. It is a volcanic cave formed when lava flowed underground, leaving behind a natural tunnel.

In simple terms, the outer part of a lava flow cooled and solidified first, while hotter lava continued to move inside. When the flow ended, an empty tunnel remained. That is the kind of structure you can understand at Gruta das Torres.

The cave is part of the Lajidos–Gruta das Torres formation, within the volcanic complex of Pico Mountain. It is estimated to have formed about 1,500 years ago during an eruption originating in Cabeço Bravo.

Why is Gruta das Torres important?

Gruta das Torres is important for three main reasons: size, conservation, and educational value. With about 5,150 meters, it is the largest known lava tube in Portugal. It also helps visitors understand Pico’s volcanic formation, which is hard to grasp from just looking at the mountain or the lava fields on the surface.

Inside, the point is not to find a cave “decorated” in the classic sense. The focus is on the lava structures: ridged walls, side benches, lava balls, different types of lava, and formations that show how lava behaved as it moved through the tunnel.

It is especially interesting to travelers who enjoy geology, volcanology, nature, science, landscape interpretation, and educational tourism.

Gruta das Torres vs. Algar do Carvão: very different experiences

It is normal to compare Gruta das Torres on Pico Island with Algar do Carvão on Terceira Island. But they are very different experiences.

Place Type of experience What to expect
Gruta das Torres Horizontal lava tube. Geological interest, lava tunnel structure, volcanic formations, a sense of exploration, and a better understanding of lava flow.
Algar do Carvão Subvertical volcanic cave / volcanic chimney. A more monumental descent, stronger visual impact, more dramatic formations, and a lake at the bottom.

If you are looking for an attraction with immediate visual impact, Algar do Carvão usually feels more impressive. If you want to understand how lava moved through Pico and how the island was shaped underground, Gruta das Torres is very interesting.
