Museums

Pico is an island that offers a rich variety of museums for travelers who enjoy cultural and historical activities. The museums here are fascinating because their themes are deeply connected to the island’s unique heritage, from its geological nature to its world-renowned traditions.

You can explore interpretation centers dedicated to volcanoes, the epic history of whale hunting, and the unique landscape of the vineyards and wine production, among others.

1. Center of Interpretation of the Vineyard Cultural Landscape of Pico (CIPCVIP)

Located in the heart of the Lajido de Santa Luzia, this center was created by rehabilitating an ancient warehouse. It serves as the essential starting point for understanding the local heritage, which was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Visitors can watch a short documentary about the vineyard landscape and gather information about the cultural values of the region. The visit also includes guided tours of the “currais” (stone-walled vineyard plots), a traditional warehouse, and a functioning alembic (distillery).

One of the highlights is walking through the “lajidos” (lava fields), where you can see the micro-reliefs left by ancient lava flows and discover several species of endemic flora that have settled in the cracks of the basaltic rock.

A visit to this museum is a must for anyone wanting to learn about the prestige of Pico’s wines. In the past, these wines were so highly regarded that they were exported globally and even served at the tables of the Russian Tsars.

Set in the former Carmelite Convent, the museum features ancient cellars, a distillery, and interactive exhibition spaces. Don’t miss the chance to walk through the iconic secular dragon trees (dragoeiros), some of which are hundreds of years old, providing a magnificent backdrop to the vineyards.

3. Whalers’ Museum (Museu dos Baleeiros)

Housed in three 19th-century boat houses, this museum tells the epic story of the whaling activity that once sustained the island. Whaling began in the 18th century with the arrival of American ships and became a core part of Pico’s economy until the 1980s.

The permanent exhibition is divided into five sections: the Whaling Boat, the Blacksmith’s Shop, Boat Building, Scrimshaw (Whale Art), and the Whaler on Land. It is a deeply moving tribute to the men who faced the giants of the sea in small wooden boats.

This is not a traditional museum, but an immersive experience. Located in the protected landscape of Santa Luzia, it serves as a gateway to understanding the volcanic origins of the Azores. It features a seismic simulator where you can experience the sensation of an earthquake and an interactive dome for a “journey to the center of the Earth.”

Pico’s museums are a perfect plan for any day, especially when the weather isn’t ideal for natural pools or hiking. However, even on sunny days, we highly recommend spending at least an hour or two exploring these sites to truly understand the soul of the island.

Pro Tip: Most museums have limited capacity for tours (especially Casa dos Vulcões). We advise calling ahead to book your visit.
